A Brief History
In 1991, Brian Lemay wrote his first book, 'Layout and Design Made Amazingly Simple' to be used in his layout drawing course. As he puts it, "The problem was that there weren't any books that covered the topic adequately enough. I had been buying books on animation for years but they were either superficial; devoting only 2 or 3 pages to the topic or they were 'The Art Of...' coffee table books. They had beautiful artwork but they simply didn't explain all the technical stuff or the thought process that goes into a layout. "I got really frustrated during my first year teaching so I sat down with all my peersonal notes and reference materials along with all my studio notes and started writing. The end result was the 'Layout and Design Made Amazingly Simple' book." Selling the book to just the students in the program for the first year, word soon spread and people began ordering the books from across North America. Realizing the potential, Brian formed the Animated Cartoon Factory as a publishing/distribution company. Since that first book, Brian has gone on to write, illustrate and publish 7 books: Designing Cartoon Characters for Animation Vol. 1, Designing Cartoon Characters for Animation Vol. 2. Layout and Design Made Amazingly Simple, The Advanced Layout and Design Workbook Animation: The Basic Principles Character Animation & Lip Sync These are currently being used at many schools of animation across North America, Europe, and Asia. The Advanced Layout and Design Workbook has been translated into Korean for use in their animation schools with plans for translating the other books as well.
Next books: Storyboarding for Animation and Film This book has been completely written and Brian is in the process of doing the editing and illustrations throughout. Dynamic Posing for Animation This book is in the process of being written and illustrated. The first section of the book is available for preview.
