Two Point Perspective

CREATING A BOX WITH THE HORIZON LINE ABOVE

Step 1:

Again, begin with a horizon line, remember, this is your eye level. Place two vanishing points on the horizon line. Keep these two vanishing points wide apart. Placing the vanishing points too close together will create an awkward looking box.

Step 2:

Draw a vertical line . This line will represent the edge of the box that is closest to you.

Step 3:

Extend lines from both the top and bottom of this corner line off to the two vanishing points. These lines will represent the two sides of the box that are closest to you.

Step 4:

Draw two vertical lines to represent the outside edges of the box.

Step 5:

To define the bottom of the box, extend lines from the bottom of these two lines to the two vanishing points.

Step 6:

To define the top of the box, extend lines from the top of the two outside vertical lines to the two vanishing points.

Erase the excess construction lines to make things look a little clearer.

Step 7:

Draw the last vertical line at the points where the lines extending to the vanishing points cross (bisect) each other.

This leaves you with the finished two-point perspective box.

This box below is shown completed. The edge that is closest to you has been drawn closer to the left hand vanishing point. This rotates the box in a clockwise direction to the viewer, presenting more of the right hand side and less of the left side.

* Note: To create a view of the box as though you are looking up at the bottom, place the horizon line below.

Shown here is a box with a midline horizon line in which you cannot see either the top or bottom face of the box.
