Introduction

This is the second volume, the companion if you will, to the Designing Cartoon Characters for Animation book that I put together back in 1993. In this, Volume 2, I wanted to expand on the information given in the first book and create more of an assignment based book that you could actually follow along and do the exercises and hopefully learn more about your own drawing abilities.

Some of the information is a repeat from the first volume, and I don’t apologize for this as I think it’s good to always review. In certain sections I’ve indicated specific reading assignments from the first volume as well as the Layout and Design Made Amazingly Simple book. I didn’t want to just repeat all the information, verbatim.

This booklet was originally released as The Animation Drawing Course and was the manual for the correspondence course. The students would complete each of the assignments and then send them to me for review. This worked very well but I think that there were a lot of people, probably just like you that didn’t want to pay the extra money for the reviews and correspondence. So, here it is by itself.

There was also a companion video that went along with it that shows me going through the various principles explained in the book. This tape is still available for $25.00 if you’re interested. You can find the ordering information by going back to the homepage of the website.

I’ve also added a supplementary section of a series of drawings from my sketchbook for you to browse through and hopefully inspire you.

Look for another volume of this series in about another year entitled Designing Cartoon Characters Sketchbook.
