Two Characters Here are four different sequences to show you how you can mix and match your shot selection for this assignment. |

Sequence 1 | ||||||||||||||||||||
In this first sequence there is only one scene, the whole thing is a long shot showing both characters in a full body view.
There's nothing wrong with this approach aside from the fact that it's one really long scene and you have to draw the entire body of both characters, that's a lot of drawing! |

Sequence 2 | ||||||||||||||||||||
SC 1 | SC 2 | SC 3 | SC 4 | |||||||||||||||||
In this sequence, there are 4 scenes. Scene 1 is a long shot (same as in sequence 1). Scene 2 is a close up on Cassim. Scene 3, cuts to a close up on Mustapha as he does a take. Scene 4 cuts back out to a long shot as Mustapha grabs Cassim.
Ideally, there would be a cut after scene 3 to a view of the alleyway showing all the doors with an "X" on them. |

Sequence 3 | ||||||||||||||||||||
SC 1 | SC 2 | SC 3 | SC 4 | |||||||||||||||||
In this sequence, there are 3 scenes. Scene 1 is a medium two shot that continues into Cassim's line. Scene 2, cuts to a close up on Mustapha as he does a take. Scene 3 cuts back out to a long shot as Mustapha grabs Cassim.
Again, there would be a cut after scene 2 to a view of the alleyway showing all the doors with an "X" on them. |

Sequence 4 | ||||||||||||||||||||
SC 1 | SC 2 | SC 3 | SC 4 | |||||||||||||||||
In this sequence, we're back to 4 scenes. This is a mixture of Sequence 2 and 3. Scene 1 is a long shot, then we cut to scene 2 which is a medium two shot. Scene 3, cuts to a close up on Mustapha as he does a take. Scene 4 cuts back out to a long shot as Mustapha grabs Cassim.
Again, there would be a cut after scene 3 to a view of the alleyway showing all the doors with an "X" on them. The other option would be to put the cut to the alleyway after scene 2. Of course the shot selection would also depend on the size relationships between the two characters, their position in relation to each other in the environment and the emphasis that you want to place on either the characters or their dialogue. Try out a few variations in thumbnail form to see which one works best for you. It's also probably better to break up the scenes according to the dialogue. Don't be afraid to cut mid sentence to get a reaction from the other character, just be sure that it's properly timed so it doesn't make the scene too short. When you cut together your story reel timed to the soundtrack, you'll see whether it works or not. |
