The theory of layout is thoroughly expained in this book. There are a few hundred illustrations scattered throughout to show you what it is I'm trying to explain as well as lots of layout backgrounds for inspirational purposes (not exactly suitable for framing though).

Elements such as composition, depth; foreground, midground, and background, focal points, overlays, underlays, held cels, matchlines, and many other terms and theories are covered in great detail to help you understand exactly what you need to do to improve your layout drawing abilities.

The various elements that assist the layout artist such as Location Designs, Model Sheets, and Storyboards are explained thoroughly. Here are a couple of examples of tracking storyboard panels. The layouts would then be drawn using the storyboard panels as a reference.
