"And Then What Happened?"

And Then What Happened?

by Zach Schwartz and Jim Macaulay 1996
120 pages for $20.00 US

...And Then What Happened? deals with storytelling and writing for animation. The book goes through 25 examples from a variety of different cartoons and analyzes them thoroughly.

This is a very well written book dealing with the theory of story structure.

Zach Schwartz worked as a background painter at Warner Bros. in the early 1930's with Friz Freleng. He then went on to work at Disney on Snow White, painting backgrounds, most notably for the step cleaning/well sequence at the beginning of the film. He was also a background painter on Bambi. He was responsible for talking Walt into putting The Sorcerers Apprentice sequence into Fantasia. Later, Zach was one of the principle founders of the U.P.A. studio famous for revolutionizing the animation industry styles for decades by introducing such characters as Gerald McBoing Boing and Mr. Magoo. Zach is currently living at home in Israel.

Jim Macaulay has worked for the National Film Board of Canada as well as several live action production companies, designing sets. He was one of the first group of animation instructors to teach at Sheridan College in the early 1970's and retired in 1988. He still does consulting for a variety of different companies and schools and tinkers with his models in his spare time.
