Spheres - Their Use in the Head Structure

The head is made of a sphere. This can be either circular or modified into an oval, egg, peanut or whatever other variation you can think of. The use of the sphere is not limited to just the head though, it’s used in the torso; the chest and the pelvis, the hands and the feet.

Understanding how to draw and use spheres is probably the most important foundational tool you’ll need to draw cartoon characters for animation. This will seem a lot like Lesson One, in that you’ll probably feel like,”Oh, man! Why do we have to do this goofy stuff! I just wanna draw cartoon characters!!”

You’ve gotta crawl before you walk.

Every single drawing I do of a cartoon character always starts with the spheres. They help me to establish the volume, structure, attitude, proportions, and pose of the character.

A cross contour is a line that shows the surface of the shape. They are also called center lines, and eye lines depending on which they’re used for. The center lines help to show the twist or rotation of the head or body. The eye line indicates the tilt up, down or sideways of the head.
