This was a M.A.D. Agent for a show called "Greenfinger". I patterned the main character off an actor named, Sydney Greenstreet. He played a mob boss in The Maltese Falcon with Humphrey Bogart and Peter Lorre. You can see the thick outline around the character in this drawing. As I mentioned elsewhere in the website, I was using this style in some of the work I was doing in magazine illustrations and newspaper editorial cartoons beginning in 1981. The thick outline gave the characters a very bold and graphic look. I tried to talk them into using it for the Gadget show but it would have been far too laborious for the animators to outline each drawing... remember, this was before computers could do that. Now you see it everywhere on shows like Dexter's Laboratory, Samurai Jack, Kim Possible, Danny Phantom, etc. I guess I was just 20 years ahead of everyone... well actually 30 years behind cause I stole it from some designs from the 1950's. |
