Droids Layout Backgrounds | |||||||||

Here are a couple of background layouts from the first show. This one to the left is of a gate that has a drawbridge door that closes in the scene.
The layout below is a pan background of an alley that the speeder is flying through. This was supposed to be a view from inside the speeder. The storyboards from these shows were very elaborate and showed a great amount of detail. In many cases, we just took the storyboard panels, enlarged them to the 6 fld size and then added all the appropriate details from the location designs. Our quota on these shows was the same as it was on Ewoks and the Care Bears. We were supposed to do 10 fields a day. If you had a pan BG it would count for 2 unless it was really complicated, then you would get credit for 4. There weren't too many of those. We had a competition during the production to see who could do the most in one day. My best was 56 (it was a long day). |
Here is a rough animation pose from the first show called "The White Witch" which was a racing speeder owned by Thall.
In this scene, R2 is hanging upside down from a magnetic platform. The gizmo sticking out is a welding torch. He's working on the speeder in Thall's garage. In order to speed up production, the layout artists were divided into two categories: Senior Layout Artist and Assistant Layout Artist. The Senior artist was the one with more experience or drawing ability as far as roughing out the scenes. The Assistant was the artist better at the clean up of the drawings. Each Senior artist had an Assistant. The Senior artist would draw the layouts at 6 field size in rough and then give them to the Assistant, who would enlarge the drawings and clean them up at their full size. |
