Chuck Jones
September 21, 1912 - February 22, 2002
Starting as a "cel washer" he worked his way up to being an animator and then a director at Warner Bros Cartoons. Famous for creating many characters (Wile E.Coyote, Henery Hawk, Pep Le Pew, Marvin Martian, Ralph Wolf, Road Runner, Sam Sheepdog, Sniffles) as well as carrying on Warner favourites like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig etc...). Especially famous cartoons tend to have be "created" with writer Michael Malteze. His Autobiography, published by Simon & Schuster isbn 0671710249(1990) "Chuck Amuck", gives a very amusing account of his life. It is liberally sprinkled with hundreds of cartoons with some colour plates.

Trivia
Close friend of Theodor (Dr Suess - "Cat in the Hat" fame) Geisel.
At 85, Chuck signed a long term contract with Warner Bros. to supervise the animation department. His thoughts on the contract were "At 85 you can only think ahead for the next 50 years or so."
His cartoons "What's Opera, Doc?" (1957) and "Duck Amuck" (1953) have been accepted into the US National Film Registry.
Personal quotes
"Animation isn't the illusion of life; it is life!"
[On one of his most famous characters] "The coyote is victimized by his own ineptitude. I never understood how to use tools and that's really the coyote's problem."
Biography from Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia:
One of the grand masters of animated cartoons, Jones can get laughs out of his characters' tiniest gestures: a wriggle of Bugs Bunny's eyebrows, a snap of Daffy Duck's bill. Those nuances are among his trademarks, and though he worked for years in the Warner Bros. "house style," his cartoons were always distinctively his own.
Graduating from the animator's chair to the director's in the late 1930s, Jones at first was intrigued with size and propor tion, and made many films about little characters-from Joe Glow the Firefly to Sniffles the mouse to Porky's Ant. He made many fine cartoons, including The Dover Boys, The Rabbit of Seville but reached his peak in the 1950s, collaborating mostly with writer Michael Maltese. Their cartoons struck an amazing balance between visual slapstick and verbal wit, as in Rabbit Seasoning (1952), Bully for Bugs and Duck Dodgers in the 24th Century (both 1953). In Duck Amuck (1953) they deconstructed the cartoon itself; in What's Opera, Doc? (1957) they squished Wagner's Ring Cycle into seven minutes of stylized nonsense; and in One Froggy Evening (1955) they created a timely and timeless parable about greed and exploitation. They also set themselves the formidable task of creating a series of cartoons with a fixed set of rules when they made the Road Runner/Coyote series, and managed to find endless (and hilarious) variations on their own formula. Pepe LePew was also a Jones/Maltese creation.
When the Warner Bros. cartoon department expired, Jones cowrote (with his wife Dorothy) a feature for UPA, Gay Purr-ee (1963), then joined the reconstituted MGM cartoon department, where he directed and supervised a new series of Tom and Jerry shorts, adapted an awardwinning book into an Oscar-winning short film, The Dot and the Line (1965), and codirected the live-action/animated feature The Phantom Tollbooth (1969). Jones spent the balance of his career creating high-quality half-hour TV specials, including such perennials as How the Grinch Stole Christmas Widely celebrated in recent years at film festivals and special programs around the world, Jones has lent advice to various filmmakers and even made cameo appearances in the films of his fan Joe Dante (who featured him in 1984's Gremlins-and named a high school after him in the plot; he also had Jones direct funny closing credits for 1990's Gremlins 2 Jones produced an animated segment for the 1992 live- action feature Stay Tuned which-not surprisingly-was the best thing about the movie. In 1994 he launched a new series of theatrical shorts-for Warner Bros. His autobiography, "Chuck Amuck," was published in 1989.
