Bill Hanna

This durable team comprises one of the few "brand names" in animated cartoons, though they have been both praised and reviled for their work in this field. Praise came when they created the cat-andmouse duo Tom and Jerry at MGM in the early 1940s; their perfection of a comic formula for these stars, and their creative manipulation of that formula through scores of cartoon shorts earned them an amazing seven Academy Awards, and worldwide renown. When the MGM cartoon department shut its doors in 1956, and Hanna and Barbera formed their own studio to produce cartoons expressly for TV, they succeeded with a double-edged sword. On the one hand, they rescued the floundering animation industry, and offered more employment for artists, writers, and technicians than any other cartoon entity since Disney in the 1930s. But at the same time, bowing to TV's economic pressures, they stripped the medium of animation to its barest essentials, and removed most of the art - the very art they'd helped to develop-in the process.

Joseph Barbera was heading for a career in banking when he started selling magazine cartoons on the side, in the 1930s. He subsequently found employment at the New York based Van Beuren cartoon studio, and moved from there to Terrytoons. One of his colleagues sent word back that MGM was expanding its cartoon department, and Barbera answered the call in 1937. William Hanna had already cut his teeth on cartoons on the West Coast; the former journalism and engineering student went to work for Harman and Ising in 1931, bursting with story ideas. By 1937 he was being given a trial run as director. Hanna and Barbera gravitated toward each other, and were soon working as a team under the supervision of MGM's Hugh Harman and Rudolf Ising.

They received screen credit for a few one-shot cartoons like The Goose Goes South and Officer Pooch (both 1941), but once Tom and Jerry were established, in Puss Gets the Boot (1940, credited onscreen to Ising) they concentrated on those characters for the next 15 years. Barbera's strength was in gags and story development, while Hanna saw himself more as a director, with a solid sense of timing; they complemented each other perfectly. Their Oscars were awarded for Yankee Doodle Mouse (1943), Mouse Trouble (1944), Quiet Please (1945), The Cat Concerto (1947), Mouse Cleaning (1948), Two Mouseketeers (1952), and Johann Mouse (1953).

Hanna and Barbera got a wonderful opportunity when Gene Kelly and director George Sidney approached them to help create a sequence with Kelly for their MGM feature Anchors Aweigh (1945). The finished sequence, crafted with trial and error, was a smash, and the team provided similar material for the later features Holiday in Mexico (1946), Dangerous When Wet (1953, with Esther Williams), and Kelly's Invitation to the Dance (1957).
Their initial TV venture was "Ruff 'n' Reddy" in 1957. But their breakthrough came with the hit half-hour show "Huckleberry Hound" in 1959; it was followed by "Yogi Bear," "Quick Draw McGraw," and endless others. Their prime-time, "adult" hit "The Flintstones" (1960-66) proved to be a longer running success than anyone could have imagined. Their TV success even led them back to theatrical cartoons: Columbia commissioned a series of shorts (featuring Loopy de Loop) in the early 1960s, and then bankrolled two features, Hey There, It's Yogi Bear (1964) and A Man Called Flintstone (1966). The studio flirted with theatricals from time to time after that, but neither Charlotte's Web (1973), the long in production Heidi's Song (1982), nor the undernourished Jetsons: The Movie (1990) gave Disney any competition in that arena. Their bread-and-butter was TV animation, produced by the carload.
