Max Fleischer
July 19, 1883 - September 11, 1972
This self-effacing cartoonist and inventor was Walt Disney's only serious rival for many years. Like Disney, and many other pioneering animators, he started out as a newspaper cartoonist. A serious art student, he also had scientific knowledge and curiosity; while working as art director for Popular Science Monthly he devised the idea of creating animated cartoons by filming liveaction footage first, then tracing those movements one frame at a time. His brother Dave Fleischer donned a clown's costume and posed for Max's camera, and thus became the model for Koko the Clown. Max was awarded a patent for his invention, called the rotoscope, but was unable to sell the idea as a practical means of making movies because the work was too time-consuming. Eventually he and Dave realized that they could use the rotoscope as a tool to enhance their freehand work, and began producing Out of the Inkwell cartoons featuring Koko, and some amazingly lifelike animation. What's more, they came up with the idea of having that clown cavort in a real world, combining live-action and animation together. The series caught on, and ran from 1919 to 1929. (The "special effects" of the constantly clever series were enhanced by Max's follow-up invention, the rotograph, which allowed live-action footage to be rear-projected onto a pane of glass one frame at a time-enabling both Koko and the footage around him to move simultaneously.)
In the mid 1920s, Max produced the first "talking" cartoons in collaboration with Dr. Lee De Forest, and created a device called the Bouncing Ball to encourage audiences to sing along with lyrics printed on the screen. Unfortunately, these films were regarded as a novelty, and nothing more, and Max's innovation was largely ignored.
When the industry as a whole adopted sound, Max brought his Bouncing Ball to a much larger audience. But it was another character, introduced in 1930's Dizzy Dishes which brought him greater fame: the sexy flapper Betty Boop. She became a major cartoon star, and her saucy adventures were extremely popular. When the motion picture industry adopted its Production Code in 1934, however, much of the pizzazz of Betty's films was stripped away (no pun intended); her costume became more demure, and so did the racy humor. While Disney's staff was largely Midwestern, and his early films reflected a rural sensibility, Max and Dave were city boys, and so were most of their animators and gagmen; their films were urban and ethnic. They may not have had Disney's polish, but they had their own distinctive sense of humor. Dave, the studio's director-in-chief, was a superb gagman who inspired his animators to cram as many funny ideas as possible into every frame of film.
In 1933, Fleischer negotiated to bring Elzie Segar's "Thimble Theatre" comic strip character Popeye to the screen, and this became the studio's most enduring claim to fame. Beginning with Popeye the Sailor (in which he sang his now-familiar theme song), this foghorn-voiced, pipesmoking sailor man became one of the screen's greatest stars-seriously rivaling Disney's Mickey Mouse. So great was his popularity that Fleischer featured him in a trio of two-reel Technicolor "specials," Popeye the Sailor Meets Sinbad the Sailor (1936), Popeye Meets Ali Baba and His Forty Thieves (1937), and Popeye Meets Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp (1939). For these films, Fleischer perfected a process in which cartoon cels were suspended on the edge of a revolving turntable, on which miniature sets were built of cardboard and papier-mâché; the result was an amazing, three-dimensional look.
Following the success of Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Fleischer's distributor, Paramount Pictures, pressured him to make feature films as well. Neither Gulliver's Travels (1939) nor Mr. Bug Goes to Town (aka Hoppity Goes to Town (1942) gave Disney any serious competition, but they did drain the studio's resources. By this time, Fleischer had moved from New York to Florida and expanded his staff to accommodate feature production. He also took on the challenge of bringing Superman to the screen in an elaborate and expensive series of cartoons beginning in 1941. They were among his finest achievements, but sadly, they were among his last.
Paramount seized control of the studio from Max and Dave Fleischer, and kept most of their personnel. Dave moved to Hollywood and found work at Columbia and other studios in years to come. Max retreated from the spotlight, and spent his later years working with his old friend Jam Handy in Detroit, producing educational films. He never got the credit he deserved for his many inventions and innovations. His son is director Richard Fleischer.
