Personal quotes

(When asked how he wanted to be remembered) "I just want to be remembered. Period."

Biography from Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia:

One of the innovative talents who helped shape the Warner Bros. cartoon department in the 1930s and 1940s. Like his colleague Tex Avery, Clampett's sense of humor was direct and "in your face." His characters would distort themselves in astonishing ways for the sake of a laugh, and that gave Clampett's cartoons a distinctive look that separated them from those of his peers.

He started with the Warner Bros. cartoon studio in the early 1930s, when Hugh Harman and Rudolf Ising were in charge, and worked his way up to a position as fullfledged animator by the middle of the decade. When Avery was given his own unit-and the freedom to reshape the "cute" cartoons they were making into more daring and funny films-Clampett was one of his avid converts. Several years later he was given the chance to direct films himself, and spurred on by Avery's innovations, forged his own brand of comedy within the Warners house style. Piloting the Porky Pig series in the late 1930s, he came up with one funny idea after another, reaching his peak with the startlingly surreal Porky in Wackyland (1938). He also developed the character of Daffy Duck, giving him his initial lunatic personality.

Clampett's full-throttle cartoons include such gems as The Daffy Doc (1938), A Coy Decoy, Wabbit Twouble (1941, in which he's billed as Wobert Cwampettand all the credits are written in Elmer Fudd-ese), Horton Hatches the Egg, A Tale of Two Kitties (with a prototype of Tweety Bird), and the notorious Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs (all 1942), Tin Pan Alley Cats, Tortoise Wins by a Hare and the Fantasia spoof Corny Concerto (all 1943), What's Cookin', Doc? (1944, with Bugs Bunny disrupting the Academy Awards), The Old Grey Hare (1944), Draftee Daffy (1945), The Great Piggy Bank Robbery, Book Revue and Kitty Cornered (all 1946).

Clampett left the studio in 1946, worked briefly for Columbia, and then made an even bigger name for himself in the earliest days of TV as the producer of the hugely popular, award-winning puppet show "Time for Beany." Years later he revived his characters in a popular half-hour animated series, "Beany and Cecil." Clampett was also a famous pack rat, saving original animation art years be- fore anyone ever thought it would have value.
