Bruno Bozzetto (Milan, 1938) by making his first animation short "TAPUM LA STORIA DELLE ARMI" at the age of 20, drew the audience' and the critics' attention.
The most popular of his characters is MR ROSSI, a middle-aged average man in whom most of the audience recognizes itself.
With him, many animation shorts and 3 feature films were produced for Tv and cinema.
In 1965, after more than 20 years of silence in this field, he was the only one daring realize and produce an animated feature film "WEST AND SODA" followed in 1968 by "VIP MY BROTHER SUPERMAN" and in 1976 by "ALLEGRO NON TROPPO", looked upon as the italian response to the famous "Fantasia" by Walt Disney.
Bozzetto shared his passion for animation with his interest for live action. As a matter of fact, he produced 15 live action shorts (SANDWICH, SPIDER, etc.) inspired by the silent film and by the surrealism of animation. In 1987 he also made a live feature film "UNDER THE CHINESE RESTAURANT" with Nancy Brilli, Amanda Sandrelli and Bernard Blier.
Bozzetto has always asserted that animated films can also synthetize and help the big audience with understanding difficult and abstruse concepts, reason why he has always dedicated himself also to works of scientifical character, making about 100 films with Piero Angela, inserted into the Tv programme "QUARK"
But his main passion is still for producing his own shorts, when he is free from producing on assignment or taking part to festival juries. All of Bozzetto's films are distributed worldwide by Italtoons Corporation, New York, whose president, Giuliana Nicodemi, has been cooperating with Bozzetto for almost two decades.
He won many awards in his career, the most meaningful of which have been the Golden Bear, handed to him at the 1990 Berlin Film Festival in the "best short" category (MISTER TAO), and the 1991 Oscar Nomination ("GRASSHOPPERS").
These days he likes to experiment with 2D computer animation, a technique through which he produced "Europe&Italy" plus 3 more animation shorts. On behalf of the Future Film Festival, he's now working at a series composed of 12 web short films, entitled "Tony and Maria".
In 1995 he realizes an animated short of 7' for Hanna& Barbera entitled "HELP?" and in 1996, in coproduction with RAI and with the support of Cartoon (Media Programme of the European Union), he realizes a 5' animation pilot film of the serial SPAGHETTI FAMILY. It will include 26 shorts of 26 minutes each one, at the production of which Animation Band is now working. The films will be produced by RAI.
In December 2000, in order to celebrate the 40 years of activity in the animation field, an exhibition of his works has been set in Milan, at the Museum of Porta Romana, later moved in Bergamo in February 2001 at the "Teatro Sociale" of Bergamo.
Among Bozzetto's collaborators have been Maurizio Nichetti, Guido Manuli ,Giuseppe Laganà and many more, now become firm professionists in this field.
Again, in collaboration with Animation Band, he's now been working at a Pilot film of a few minutes for a feature film entitled "Mammut".
He's quite recently brought two animated shorts to an end. Created by exploiting the 2D computer techniques, the shorts are called "EUROPE&ITALY", "TONY&MARIA" and the forthcoming "THINGS" ("I COSI"). Meanwhile he has also accomplished 10' humoristic live action shorts featuring Pietro Ghislandi (Doctor Ghiss) entitled "Theatre".
2001 sees 2D computer animation no longer as a experiment- technique but as a new adopted style which leads to the production of more 2D animation shorts some of which requested to join the FUTURE FILM FESTIVAL series of 12 episodes, parodies of all cinema's genres existing. Toward the end of this year Bozzetto creates YES/NO, an hironical education to the road behaviour which is funny for its paradoxes. The same month sees the release of one more amazing 2D computer of the title "WORLD'S HISTORY FOR THOSE WHO ARE IN A HURRY" (2' long) which runs through the main events of world's history from a very special and particularly quick point of view.
Bozzetto also occasionally dedicates his free time to illustrations for magazines such as "Donna Moderna" and "Qui Bergamo". Also, he collaborates with the daily "Corriere della sera", for which he makes weekly satirical cartoons.
