WG4 Schenectady
1st Television Station

It may be the very first television station, but is anybody watching? This new technology was proposed by Edison way back in 1889, 39 years ago as an early form of video phone and it's finally been brought into reality. It'll probably take another 20 years for the animation industry to capitalize on this new wonder of the 20th century, but is it just some passing fad? We'll just have to wait and see.

Disney's
"Steamboat Willie"
Sucessfully Uses Sound

Walt Disney has released his cartoon "Steamboat Willie" complete with a syncronized sound track. Although sound has been used in cartoons by the Fleischers since 1924 in their "Song Car-Tunes" as well as Paul Terry's cartoon "Dinner Time" (which premiered a couple of weeks before Disney's film). The amazing thing, is how well the sounds match the actions on screen. Could this be the end of the "silent era"?

Disney has also released another film titled, “Skeleton Dance”, which is quite a different film than the Mickey Mouse one. This eerie film is set to music in which skeletons come out and dance with each other at night. Very little plot but lots of mood. Ub Iwerks was the animator on both of these films.

The Fleischer Bros. studio has released the short cartoon “Koko’s Earth Control” which is a rather surrealistic film which the Fleischers have become known for.
