Thought Process Follow your Basic Work Process Handout for the overall process of doing this assignment. As I mentioned above, you will find it helpful to try sculpting your head shapes out of plasticine and using them for reference as you do this assignment. You can save the five shapes and use them for later assignments when we begin to add on the features. Take a toothpick and scratch a center line down the middle of the shape to divide the front view in half and then scratch on an eye line wherever you think its appropriate. This will help give you a visual reference as to the angle of the ellipse. Once youve done the sculptures, look at them from all different angles. Begin by drawing the basic sphere and adding on the extension shape for the rest of the head or neck. Then describe the surface contours by drawing on the center lines and the eye lines for each one. Take a moment to double check your drawings to make sure the contour lines are accurate and actually describe the surface as you want it to. Be critical at this stage. Really analyze what youve done and dont be afraid to erase and fix it up to the way you really want it. You may not be able to see the errors now, it might only come to you after I point them out in the review, (or maybe not if you got it right). The point is, on this exercise, this is the one where the lights will begin to go on in your heads, so be ready for it, from this exercise on a lot of lights will be clicking for you. Common Errors - The most common error on this one is not getting the angle of the eye line to slant properly for the tilt you want on the head. It usually is not enough or the ellipse is too flat. - Not placing the center line in the center of the rotation. Very similar to the ellipse problem above. Also having the center line not wrap up over the top of the head properly (see the examples below). |
